Tanzanians urged to buy local products
TANZANIANS have been urged to build a
tendency of buying local products so as
to help strengthen local entrepreneurs
and also boost up the national economy.
Addressing entrepreneurs and the general
public during the opening of the small
and medium entrepreneurs (SME’s)
products show in Tabora on Wednesday,
September 3, 2008, the Deputy Minister
for Industry, Trade and Marketing, Hon.
Dr. Cyril Chami said there has been a
tendency among Tanzanians to prefer
foreign products to local ones.
“I urge the general public to change
this attitude and instead prefer local
products,” urged Dr. Chami, adding that
only this will guarantee markets for
SMEs products.

He commended organizers and participants
and said SMEs trade fairs help stimulate
the economy of a given area, and also
help promote local products among
Tanzanians.
Responding to some of the queries raised
by entrepreneurs, Hon. Dr. Chami urged
financial institutions in collaboration
with the Small Industries Development
Organization (SIDO) to look for a
mechanism of providing low interest
loans to SMEs.
He also urged entrepreneurs to ensure
that they abide by safety and quality
requirements to be sure of winning
local, foreign and international
markets, adding that the problem is not
markets but quality.
On a need for special areas for
entrepreneurs to sell their products,
Dr. Chami directed city, municipal and
town councils to allocate areas for
small and medium entrepreneurs for easy
access by buyers.
Earlier, SMEs representatives had told
the Deputy Minister that among other
things, they lack appropriate loan
facilities, training, implements,
markets and the TBS mark of quality.
The fair which was organized by SIDO,
took place at the Chipukizi grounds in
Tabora Municipality from 1 to 6
September, 2008 and it was special for
Central Zone entrepreneurs. The intended
regions were Tabora, Singida, Kigoma and
Dodoma. However, there were also
entrepreneurs from Dar es Salaam, Arusha,
Rukwa and Manyara regions.
Under the Government’s initiative to
strengthen the SMEs sector, SIDO
identifies and helps strengthen SMEs
establishments countrywide. TBS also
helps certify their products to ensure
consumer safety and markets access.
