SMEs urged to make use of TBS laboratories

Small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) have been urged to fully utilize the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) laboratories so as to verify the quality of their products, thus ensuring local and international markets access.

The Minister for Industry, Trade and Marketing, Hon. Dr. Mary Nagu made the remark when opening the Small Industries Development Organization (SIDO) lake Zone Exhibition held in Mara region recently.
A cross section of small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) listening during a seminar on the procedures to be followed by producers before acquiring licences to use the quality mark on their products. The seminar was conducted by TBS during the SIDO SMEs Lake Zone Exhibition held in Mara region recently.

Dr. Nagu said any quality product can easily penetrate in the international market so long as it has been certified by TBS which is internationally recognized.

The Minister further said that small and medium entrepreneurs’ zonal exhibitions which are organized by SIDO are of great importance as they broaden internal and external market hence increasing national income.

Moreover, she said through such exhibitions, exhibitors get to learn from each other and share experiences hence strengthening trade relationship.

“We need to utilize the available trade opportunities especially in the East African Community which has a market of more than 100 million people. Conveniently, the Lake Zone is the centre of East Africa,” insisted Dr. Nagu.

The exhibition which drew 220 participants from Mara, Kagera, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Tabora, Kigoma and Dar es Salaam regions, as well as Kenya, displayed a range of products which included food products, fabrics, leather products, wines, farm implements and local medicine.

Apart from the five days exhibition, TBS officers conducted a seminar on procedures to be followed by producers before acquiring licences to use the Standards Mark of Quality. TBS also conducted a seminar for SIDO Lake Zone managers, technical officers and business development officers on how to assist small and medium entrepreneurs when pursuing quality mark licences.

Under the Government’s initiative to strengthen the SMEs sector, SIDO identifies and helps strengthen SMEs establishments countrywide. TBS helps certify their products to ensure consumer safety and markets access.
