Increase awareness campaigns on quality mark - TBS told
THE Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania HE Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein has urged the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) to increase awareness campaigns on its Standard Mark of Quality.

Dr. Shein made the call in Dar es Salaam on 2007-10-18 when he paid a familiarization visit to TBS.

"TBS is doing a tremendous job in ensuring that the public consumes products that meet standards, but the public out there is not aware of the meaning of the mark branded on products which are already in the market," he remarked.

"There is a great need for the public to be well-informed on the mark. It is high time for you (TBS) to increase awareness campaigns that will make the public free from using uncertified products," urged Dr. Shein.

The VP added: "It is very important for the Bureau to ensure that ordinary people understand the meaning and importance of the mark. The public needs to use products with that mark, but they cannot do so if they are not aware of the mark’s importance and meaning."

Dr. Shein also supported the move by TBS to push for the amendment of the Standards Act in order to enhance its ability to accomplish its functions. "An amended act will give you powers to control fake products that have caused public outcry," he said.

He called upon the Bureau’s authorities to ensure that it creates awareness campaigns for the public to understand what it really does.

"You should target small groups and ordinary people, those in Buguruni, Manzese and elsewhere to make them understand TBS," he insisted. He also urged Tanzanians to inculcate a culture of consuming products that are certified by TBS.

"It sounds good when you buy something made in Tanzania and branded by a TBS mark. It is necessary for everybody to ensure that they buy products with TBS mark," he said.

Earlier, Acting TBS Director Charles Ekelege told the VP that plans were underway to ensure that the public acquires proper information in regard to its functions.
