EAC Quality Web Portal officially launched
The East African Community Quality Web Portal has
been officially launched.
The portal -
www.eac-quality.net - which is shared by
the five national standards bodies of East Africa,
was launched on September 27, 2007 by the Permanent
Secretary of the Ministry for Industry, Trade and
Marketing, Dr. Stergomena L Tax.
In a
speech that was read on her behalf by her deputy,
Dr. Florence Turuka, the PS said, if properly
managed and utilized, the web portal will contribute
much in disseminating information on matters of
standardization, quality assurance, metrology and
testing and help build a quality culture in the
region.
She also urged the standards bodies sharing the
portal to ensure that they maintain their portal by
continually providing the users with fresh content
and guaranteeing interactivity and easy access.
"The portal should also be client oriented and
user-friendly," said Dr. Tax adding: "My desire is
for you to ensure that your portal is updated as
often as possible to better serve your purpose."
In her introductory remarks, the Chairperson of the
TBS Executive Council Prof. Apollinaria Pereka told
the Guest of Honor that the East African Quality Web
Portal is a project initiated by and belonging to
the East African Community national standards
bodies, with the purpose to establish a focal point
for information exchange, coordination and community
building activities between the main actors in
standardization, quality assurance, metrology and
testing in the region.
In a speech read on her behalf by TBS Executive
Council member Mr. Said Nkya, Prof. Pereka said the
establishment of the portal is in line with the EAC
Standardization, Quality Assurance, Metrology and
Testing (SQMT) Mission, that is harmonizing regional
SQMT activities and building a client oriented
infrastructure complying with international
standards in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and
Uganda.
"Without a well-functioning quality infrastructure,
the economic and social development of East African
countries will not be conceivable," she said, adding
that the portal is aimed at promoting quality
culture in the region.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from
EAC member states embassies in Dar es Salaam and
stakeholders in standardization and quality
assurance activities in Tanzania.
The East African Community Quality Web Portal is
shared by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS),
the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the Uganda
National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), the Rwanda
Bureau of Standards (RBS) and the Burundi Bureau of
Standards (Bureau Burundais de Normalisation - BBN).
The portal offers a wide range of information on
standardization, quality assurance, metrology,
testing and accreditation and provides access to a
variety of content and core services of the involved
standards bodies.
