TBS, FAO organize national symposium on
food safety
Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) in
collaboration with the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO) will hold a National
Symposium on Food Safety for policy and
decision makers so as to create
awareness on food safety and quality,
which are fundamental to public health,
social and economic development.
The symposium which is scheduled to be
held in Dodoma early 2008, will involve
all Members of the Parliament,
Ministers, Regional Commissioners and
Permanent Secretaries of the relevant
and key ministries.
Following the move by the Tanzania
Government to own the national action
plans for strengthening national food
control system, in February 2007 TBS and
FAO jointly formed a Planning Committee
for the National Food Safety Symposium,
whose members are from various
ministries and institutions from
mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
The committee among other things will
address thematic issues for the
symposium such as the impact of food
safety to health, social economic
development in Tanzania and the best way
in addressing them using available
resources.
It is the intention of the Symposium
Planning Committee to tackle the issue
of food safety awareness in Tanzania in
a more holistic way through
sensitization of stakeholders in a
top-down fashion in order to realize the
expected results.
The Symposium Planning Committee is
expected to accomplish various tasks
prior to hosting the national symposium.
