TBS launches mobile calibration unit
The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has launched a mobile calibration unit which will test the measuring equipment of industries, businesses and laboratories across Tanzania.

The launching was done by the Deputy Minister for Industry, Trade and Marketing, Hon. Dr. Cyril Chami, at the TBS headquarters in Dar es Salaam on Friday, May 16, 2008.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Chami underscored the importance of calibration, insisting that without calibration industries cannot be able to produce quality products which conform to the requirements of both local and international markets.

On the mobile laboratory, Hon. Dr. Chami expressed his delight that TBS will now reach testing laboratories and industries scattered all-over the country.

“I am proud to inform the general public that this facility will enable TBS metrology laboratory to transport sensitive calibration standards to its esteemed customers and provide services at their factories or testing laboratories without compromising the required precision,” he said.

He expressed his gratitude to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Government of Switzerland through its State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) for making the van available to TBS.

Earlier in his introductory remarks, TBS Director Mr. Charles Ekelege said by using this new facility, there is no doubt that TBS is going to reach for away industries with calibration services.

He also expressed his thanks to UNIDO and the Swiss Government through SECO for providing this essential support to TBS as part of a process to enhance Tanzania’s quality infrastructure.

Also present were the Ambassador of Switzerland to Tanzania, His Excellency Mr. Adrian Schlaepfer and the UNIDO Country Representative, Ms Patricia Scott who expressed confidence that the testing equipment contained in the unit will greatly improve product quality and safety in Tanzania, thus enhance trade.

The calibration van which will be operated by TBS and the Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) cost USD 354,000 (TZS 422.8 million) and was provided under the UNIDO/SECO Project on Trade Capacity Building: Enhancing the Capacities of the Tanzanian Quality Infrastructure and TBT/SPS Compliance Systems for Trade.
