PRESS RELEASE
IMPLEMENTATION OF
TANZANIA STANDARD ON REFRIGERATORS AND
FOOD FREEZERS
Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS)
wishes to inform the general public
particularly importers, that the
Tanzania Standard on refrigerators and
food freezers namely "TZS 448(Part 2-1)
:1992/IEC 60335-2-24 - Safety of
household and similar electrical
appliances Part 2-1: Particular
requirements for refrigerators and food
freezers" is under implementation.
The implementation of the said standard
involves ensuring that refrigerating
appliances do not contain any Ozone
Depleting Substances (ODS) such as
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which have
adverse effects to the environment.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) attack the
ozone layer which prevents harmful
radiations from reaching the earth.
For this reason, efforts worldwide are
directed towards phasing out these
chemicals for which Tanzania is also a
signatory. However, some traders have
been importing equipment with such
chemicals sometimes without knowing that
such chemicals have adverse effects to
the environment
By this notice, TBS wishes to inform the
importers and the general public that,
all refrigerating appliances containing
CFCs are not complying with the relevant
Tanzania Standard and these will not be
allowed entry into the Tanzania market.
Accordingly, in line with the set
Standards Regulations, consignments of
refrigerating appliances found with ODS
will be returned to the country of
origin at the importer’s cost.
