Parliamentary Committee pushes for
amended Standards Act
The Parliamentary Committee on Industry
and Trade has promised to push for the
endorsement of the amendments to the
Standards Acts No. 1 of 1975 by the
Parliament.
The Committee’s Chairman, Makunduchi MP
Hon. Abdisalam Issa Khatib made this
clear in his comments at the end of the
Committee’s familiarization tour to
Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) on
Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at TBS
headquarters in Dar es Salaam.

“I
was surprised to learn today that TBS
doesn’t have legal teeth to bite quality
offenders. The local market is
threatened by substandard products and
we have witnessed houses burning because
of poor electric cables. We will stand
firm and ensure that the amendments are
ratified to empower TBS,” said Hon.
Khatib.
He also backed TBS’s move to introduce
Pre-shipment Verification of Conformity
to Standards (PVoC) services to ensure
that products are inspected and verified
in their countries of origin thus
preventing the possibility of making
Tanzania a dumping ground of substandard
goods, especially machinery and
equipment.
Speaking after a tour to some TBS
laboratories, Committee members
commended TBS for a good job and urged
it to keep the pace, to ensure that at
the end of the day Tanzania becomes free
of substandard and poor quality
products.
On his part, the Deputy Minister for
Industry, Trade and Marketing who
accompanied the Committee members,
expressed the Ministry’s desire to see
TBS excelling even higher in
standardization and quality control. He
called upon Committee members to lobby
for increased budget of his Ministry and
for increased donor assistance to TBS.
Earlier in his introductory remarks, TBS
Director, Mr. Charles Ekelege briefed
his guests on TBS’s daily activities and
limits and requested the Committee
members to help push for the
ratification of the amendments to the
Standards Act.
