TBS to take stern measures against
manufacturers of goods which are below
standards
The Tanzania Bureau of Standards(TBS)
will take punitive measures against
business people who manufacture goods
which are below the national standards.
TBS Director, Charles Ekelege, cautioned
about this recently in Dar es Salaam
when officiating the pre- implementation
conference on bread standard, which
attracted business persons dealing with
bakeries, saying the bureau has received
a lot of complaints from consumers that
breads sold to them do not meet the
required standard.
“Baking of sub standard breads is not
only a danger to the safety and security
of the consumers, but also makes
businesses less valued and may cause one
to end up losing markets,” he said.
Ekelege said TBS will not hesitate to
take serious measures on any bakery that
supplies bread below the set standard.
He said TBS shall publish in the
newspapers and in electronic media all
companies that are producing substandard
goods to prevent people from buying
them.
The Bureau established a standard for
white bread specification in 1983 which
was supposed to be used by bakeries in
the country.
Unfortunately, majority of bakeries have
not been using the standard for unknown
reasons.
The bread standard is compulsory ,
hence, bakers are supposed to bake
breads
according to that standard, in order to
ensure safety and security of the
consumers and the society.
