Plan to give TBS more powers underway
The government plans to amend the
Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) Act
of 1975 to give it more powers of
controlling the standard of goods and
services offered in the country.
This was said in Dar es Salaam recently
by the Prime Minister, Mr. Edward
Lowassa, when he visited TBS offices, at
Ubungo Dar es Salaam.

The Prime Minister visited TBS recently. From

He said that the amendment is expected
to be tabled in parliament in April,
this year.
TBS has published more than 1000
Tanzania standards in the field of
agriculture and food chemicals,
textiles, leather, general techniques,
electrical engineering mechanical
engineering, building and construction.
On his part, the Minister for Industry,
Trade and Marketing, Mr. Basil Mramba,
said the government will not allow
substandard products even if they come
from friendly countries.
Meanwhile, TBS Director, Mr. Charles
Ekelege said TBS would improve the
standard and quality of local
commodities and services to make them
competitive in international markets.
He said so far the government has
allowed TBS to open inspection centers
at border areas, starting with Tanga,
Kilimanjaro and Mara regions. The
centers are Holili in Kilimanjaro, Tanga
Port and Horohoro in Tanga region and
Sirari in Mara region.
