Few bakeries certified by
TBS
ONLY seven bakeries in Tanzania have
been issued with quality assurance
licences after meeting mandatory
criteria.
This was revealed recently at the New
Arusha Hotel in Arusha during a one day
workshop on implementation of white
bread standard which involved bakery
owners and Tanzania Bureau of Standards
(TBS) presenters.
TBS Senior Quality Assurance Officer
David Ndibalema said during the workshop
that only seven bakeries have been
producing white bread in accordance with
the compulsory Tanzania Standard TZS
102: 1983, White bread - Specification,
which has been in force since the early
1980s.
According to Mr. Ndibalema, the
certified bakeries include Akiyda
Tanzania Ltd based in Arusha and
Kilimanjaro, Azam Bakeries Co. Ltd,
Modern Confectionery Bakery Ltd and
three bakeries owned by Mini Bakeries
Ltd at Shekilango, Magomeni and
Chang’ombe, Dar es Salaam.
He said the remaining 18 regions in
mainland Tanzania do not have a single
certified bakery although standards in
respect of bread are compulsory.
Mr. Ndibalema urged bakery owners to
ensure that they apply for quality
assurance licences which will enable
them to produce quality bread to ensure
the health of their customers and
compete fairly in the market.
The half day workshop drew 20
participants from Arusha and Kilimanjaro
who were all owners of bakeries.
