Proficiency testing scheme vital
East Africa National Standards Bodies
have been urged to produce analytical
data so as to demonstrate accuracy and
comparability of data through the
proficiency testing scheme.
This was said recently by Tanzania
Bureau of Standards (TBS) Director
Charles Ekelege, at the opening of a two
day evaluation workshop on water, edible
salt and wheat flour proficiency
testing, held at Impala Hotel in Arusha.

In a speech read on his behalf by the
Head of TBS Chemistry Laboratory, Ms
Kezia Mbwambo, the Director said
proficiency testing is one way of
confirming a laboratory competence for
specific tests or measurement, therefore
once a laboratory competence has been
demonstrated, test services provided by
the laboratory provide confidence to the
service users.
He said through recognition of
proficiency testing, TBS accepted the
role of provider both nationally and
regionally whereby at the national level
the organization provides proficiency
testing for drinking water, while at
East African Community level it provides
proficiency testing for edible salt.
East Africa Community Proficiency
Testing Scheme providers are from the
National Standards Bodies of Tanzania,
Kenya and Uganda whereby Kenya Bureau of
Standards (KEBS) provides proficiency
testing for wheat flour, Uganda National
Bureau of Standards (UNBS) provides
water proficiency testing and TBS
provides proficiency testing for edible
salt.
EAC PT Evaluation Workshop follows the
first workshop held in November 2007, in
Dar es Salaam which was held jointly
with representatives from all
participating laboratories from EAC
member states and the number of
participating laboratories has increased
from 49 in the first round to 60 in the
second round.
