TBS discusses ISO/IEC DIS 29500, the
Office Open XML Draft International
Standard before going to the ballot
The Tanzania Bureau of Standards held
discussions on the proposed
International Standard, the draft ISO/IEC
29500 -
Information technology-Office open XML
file formats -
before casting its vote on the fate of
the draft proposal. The draft was
scrutinized in the ad hoc Technical
Committee meeting held at Kilimanjaro
Kempinski Hotel on 2007-08-14.
The meeting chaired by Dr. Mercy Mbise
of the University of Dar es Salaam,
Department of Computer Science, drew
participants from the Ministry of
Infrastructure, SMS Consultancy,
Tanzania Communications Regulatory
Authority, Institute of Finance
Management, University Computing Centre,
Africa Practice, Tanzania Commission for
Science and Technology, College of
Business Education, Dar es Salaam
Institute of Technology and Tanzania
Bureau of Standards.
Following a detailed introduction of the
document ISO/IEC DIS 29500 to the
members of the Technical Committee by
the Microsoft Expert, Mr. Nicol Woodard
regarding its interoperability,
openness, multiplicity and legal safety,
the members discussed in-depth the
document. However, at the end of the
meeting, the participants agreed on the
following:

More
time was needed to go through the ISO/IEC
DIS 29500. The Committee recommended two
weeks.

More
questions, if there are going to be any,
should be forwarded to the Presenter,
Mr. Nicol Woodard, through his official
e-mail
address:

TBS
to send a soft copy of ISO/IEC DIS 29500
to each participant through their e-mail
addresses.

28th
August 2007 is the deadline for TBS to
receive comments from participants and
other stakeholders.

Other ICT experts in Tanzania should be
informed of ISO/IEC DIS 29500 for
commenting before TBS vote is casted. To
this effect, a public e-mail account has
been created for receiving comments from
all participants and the rest as
follows:
