Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) women workers and wives of their male counterparts have undergone examination for breast cancer.

The screening took place at the TBS headquarters in Dar es Salaam, on Saturday, August 16, 2008 and was conducted by Medical Women Association of Tanzania (MEWATA) doctors.

Speaking during the launching of the exercise which was preceded by a seminar, TBS Director Mr. Charles Ekelege said TBS management recognizes the importance of a healthy human resource and that it aims at ensuring that all workers are healthy and productive.

“It is indisputable that with an unhealthy work force, the highest level of productivity cannot be achieved,” said Mr. Ekelege.

Mr. Ekelege said that breast cancer has emerged as a serious disease and a major source of death among women adding, “In view of this, that is why we have found it necessary to have our female workers and male workers’ spouses examined.”

On her part, MEWATA’s Vice Chairperson Dr. Florence Temu said the percentage of breast cancer in the country has been put at 9.3, applying only for patients who attended check-ups in the hospitals and clinics.

She called upon other institutions to follow the example shown by TBS by supporting routine screening of breast cancer among their women members of staff and spouses of male staff, as a sure way of alleviating the problem in workplaces and homes.

Overall three papers were presented before the screening exercise. Dr. Muzdalifat Abeid presented two papers: Cancer of the Cervix and Obstetric Fistula, while Dr. Julieth Magandi presented a paper on Breast Cancer.

In her presentation, Dr. Magandi said so far the cause or the disease has not been established and that the most affected are women. She said that in developing countries like Tanzania, the age at which the disease mostly prevails is between 30-45 years.

More than 50 women workers of TBS and about 40 TBS workers’ spouses underwent the screening which was organized by the Women Committee of RAAWU-TBS and sponsored by TBS.
